Blind man sees after having a TOOTH implanted into his eye health
Link #146493 submitted by FoolProof on Jul 3, 2009 07:38pm.   (+290XP)
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1197256/Blind-man-sees-wife...
When Martin Jones met his wife four years ago, he never imagined that one day he would get to see what she looked like.

The 42-year-old builder was left blind after an accident at work more than a decade ago.

But a remarkable operation - which implants part of his tooth in his eye - has now pierced his world of darkness.

The procedure, performed fewer than 50 times before in Britain, uses the segment of tooth as a holder for a new lens grafted from his skin.

Prison guards foiled a new attempt to smuggle a cell phone into a Brazilian prison by carrier pigeon — this one wearing a tiny backpack — and said Friday that the practice is becoming almost commonplace.

12 Ways to Fail Your Job Interview work sucks
Link #146490 submitted by Mac on Jul 3, 2009 06:37pm.   (+100XP)
http://www.fiscalgeek.com/2009/06/fail-job-interview
During my time in management I have had the opportunity to hire many people which means I’ve interviewed over 50 people both for my positions and for fellow managers. It was one of my favorite parts of the job getting to meet new people, learn their motivations and in many cases learn what not to do. I guess you could call this of a collection of non job interview tips. Frankly it’s much easier to identify those things that are going to keep you from your dream job. For background my current company follows a rigorous interview process that involves no less than 5 different interviewers over the course of the day including a high level manager we call the As Appropriate.

So without further adieu 12 sure fire ways to fail your job interview.

A San Francisco photo-blog focusing on history, current events, and day-to-day life through the lens of our cameras. It was born out of an early conversation in which Plug1 & Plug2 expressed a sincere interest in getting to know The City and its people in the most intimate way possible: by walking the streets daily with cameras in hand.

Our snap shots focus on America’s dream metropolis: San Francisco — in all of its splendor and variety. From abandoned waterfront warehouses to mile high Fi-Di skyscrapers.

Not safe for work.

Imagine if you could look at something once and remember it forever. You would never have to ask for directions again. Now a group of scientists has isolated a protein that mega-boosts your ability to remember what you see.

Palin resigning as Alaska governor on July 26 government
Link #146487 submitted by johnny2000 on Jul 3, 2009 05:19pm.   (+200XP)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_palin_resigning
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin made a surprise announcement Friday that she is resigning from office at the end of the month without explaining why she plans to step down, raising speculation that she would focus on a run for the White House in the 2012 race.

The former Republican vice presidential candidate hastily called a news conference Friday morning at her home in suburban Wasilla, giving such short notice that only a few reporters actually made it to the announcement. State troopers blocked late-arriving media outside her home, and her spokesman, Dave Murrow, finally emerged to confirm that Palin will step down July 26. He refused to give details about the governor's future plans.

New Evidence on the Foreclosure Crisis government
Link #146486 submitted by Mac on Jul 3, 2009 05:01pm.   (+100XP)
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124657539489189043.html
What is really behind the mushrooming rate of mortgage foreclosures since 2007? The evidence from a huge national database containing millions of individual loans strongly suggests that the single most important factor is whether the homeowner has negative equity in a house -- that is, the balance of the mortgage is greater than the value of the house.

This means that most government policies being discussed to remedy woes in the housing market are misdirected.

Integrity of Federal 'Organic' Label Questioned government
Link #146485 submitted by Mac on Jul 3, 2009 04:47pm.   (+100XP)
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/02/AR2...
Three years ago, U.S. Department of Agriculture employees determined that synthetic additives in organic baby formula violated federal standards and should be banned from a product carrying the federal organic label. Today the same additives, purported to boost brainpower and vision, can be found in 90 percent of organic baby formula.

The government's turnaround, from prohibition to permission, came after a USDA program manager was lobbied by the formula makers and overruled her staff. That decision and others by a handful of USDA employees, along with an advisory board's approval of a growing list of non-organic ingredients, have helped numerous companies win a coveted green-and-white "USDA Organic" seal on an array of products.

Grated organic cheese, for example, contains wood starch to prevent clumping. Organic beer can be made from non-organic hops. Organic mock duck contains a synthetic ingredient that gives it an authentic, stringy texture.

There is so much you can't know about your spouse when you get married, like that one day she will want to eat her placenta. But there are two things you don't argue about with a pregnant woman: what she eats and that being full of life indeed looks sexy.

The poor economy has silenced dozens of Fourth of July fireworks displays around the country this year. In some cases city governments say they can't justify the expense considering tight budgets. In others, sponsors have withdrawn support as their balance sheets bleed red ink.

Sixty Symbols blinded by science
Link #146480 submitted by XIV on Jul 2, 2009 08:53pm.   (+590XP)
http://www.sixtysymbols.com/#
Ever been confused by all the letters and squiggles used by scientists? Hopefully this site will unravel some of those mysteries.

Sixty Symbols is a collection of videos about physics and astronomy presented by experts from The University of Nottingham. They aren't lessons or lectures - and this site has never tried to be an online reference book.

The films are just fun chats with men and women who love their subject and know a lot about it! It's worth noting many symbols have multiple uses across scientific disciplines and we sometimes tackle them from an unexpected viewpoint.

Click on "gamma" and you'll find a professor of physics talking about cricket balls... Click on "rho" and we're stuffing paperclips into coffee cups.

However whatever symbol you click on, we hope you'll see something interesting and maybe learn something new.

What newly released papers reveal about Einstein some dude/some chick

On July 22 the Einstein Papers Project, located at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, will release the 12th volume of letters written or received by Albert Einstein—791 of them—plus transcripts of several notable lectures and interviews the physicist gave, covering the year 1921.

It was a momentous 12 months. You might think there are no new revelations to be made about him, but for Einstein groupies the current volume addresses at least one key question: what did Einstein know about an 1887 experiment that discovered that the speed of light is invariant, regardless of the observer's speed or direction of motion—an idea that forms the core of special relativity and that Einstein did not mention when he laid out the theory of special relativity in a 1905 paper?

The Obama administration will proceed with a Bush-era plan to use National Security Agency assistance in screening government computer traffic on private-sector networks, with AT&T as the likely test site, according to three current and former government officials.
